How to report a death of an active employee or retiree?

Call the MERS office as soon as possible with all information available. Try to obtain the following information:

1. Date of death

2. Immediate family member - name, address, and phone number. If someone other than an immediate family member contacts you, obtain their contact information.

3. Find out their marital status. If the member has a legal spouse, obtain their contact information.

4. If in Plan A, find out if there are any minor children. Obtain the children's guardian contact information.

I am a new employee handling MERS at our entity. How do I get training?

Please call our office to set up a day and time for either one of our staff to come to your office or for you to visit our office.

You will find the "MERS Administrative Handbook" online for information and procedures concerning the retirement system that can be used until formal training has been received.

Is there a waiting period for enrollment into MERS?

There is no waiting or probationary period to enroll in MERS. All newly hired employees should be enrolled on their first day of employment.

What is the definition of a "full-time" employee?

LA R.S. 11:1732 13(a) "Employee" means a person including an elected official, actively employed by a participating employer on a permanent, regularly scheduled basis of at least an average of thirty-five hours per week.

When are the monthly retirement reports due?

Monthly contribution reports are due by the 10th of the following month. Consideration is given for weekends and holidays if sent through the mail.

How can I change my address or beneficiary?

To change your address, beneficiary, or marital status, our office must receive either a letter or a Personal Information Change form signed by the member only. This form is available from your human resources office, or by clicking here to complete and print for mailing. Our office will not make any changes requested by telephone. (Note: If you are changing your name be sure to include the name your MERS account is under)
